Full disclosure: this one is ours, which is why it goes first — judge it accordingly. MIT-licensed, no login: open the site and you are drawing; share the URL and others co-edit live. It aims squarely at the Lucidchart itch — 47 shape kinds, AWS/Azure/GCP/network stencils, orthogonal auto-routed connectors — plus an AI co-editor that turns text, Mermaid, or a whiteboard photo into editable shapes (your API key stays in your browser), an MCP server for agents, and a single-container self-host.

The hugely popular open-source whiteboard with a beloved hand-drawn style.

MIT-licensed and probably the best-known open-source whiteboard in the world. Its hand-drawn aesthetic defined a genre, it needs no account to start sketching, and its community and ecosystem are far larger than anything else on this page. Less about formal stencil-driven diagramming, more about fast, beautiful thinking on a canvas.

The long-established free diagramming workhorse with deep shape libraries.

Open source and free, in the browser or as a desktop app, and probably the closest feature-for-feature stand-in for Lucidchart: extensive shape libraries, formal connectors, and years of accumulated capability. The interface shows its age in places, but it is proven, private (your files stay where you put them), and everywhere. noddle draw imports its files, so trying both costs nothing.

When to pick it: Pick it for maximum diagramming surface area and a tool your whole company has probably already used.

Diagrams as code — write text, get flowcharts, sequence diagrams, and more.

Not a canvas at all: an open-source (MIT) text-to-diagram language. You describe the diagram in plain text and it renders — which means diagrams live in git, diff cleanly in code review, and render in many markdown tools. The trade-off is layout control: you say what connects, Mermaid decides where things go. (noddle draw both imports and exports Mermaid, so you can move between text and canvas.)

When to pick it: Pick it when diagrams should live next to code and be reviewed like code.
